Members are required to participate in a formation program which begins when becoming a candidate, proceeds as a novice, and continues after profession of vows. The candidacy and novitiate phases span a period of at least two years.

This program provides study materials on a series of prescribed topics and general preparation for participation in the community.

  • The mercy of God, how we experience and extend God's mercy.

  • Franciscan spirituality.
• The Mercy of God Community
  • History, charisms (ecumenical and inclusive), and culture. Diversity and sensitivity. Inclusive language.
  • Building community. Challenges and responsibilities.

For Novices:

• The Promises as a way of life:
  • Detachment from material things.
  • Responsible sexuality.
  • Obedience to the Gospel.
• MGC governance.
  • The Rule. Reflections on its scriptural basis.

Every candidate and novice is assigned to a professed member who serves as his or her mentor throughout formation.
